Thyroid MedicationThyroid medication can be prescribed to treat an over-active thyroid (hyperthyroidism) or an under-active thyroid (hypothyroidism). Thyroid hormones influence metabolism and many of the organs in the body. Those suffering from a thyroid disorder will usually have to take medication for their entire life. Thyroid medication will usually help to correct symptoms within days or weeks. Hyperthyroidism can be treated with drugs such as carbimazole and beta-blockers that are used to slow the heart rate and reduce tremors. Hypothyroidism is treated with drugs that replace thyroid hormones. These medications include Synthroid, Levoxyl and Levothroid.
