IBS Medication

IBS medication treats irritable bowel syndrome. Several different types of medication can be prescribed to treat this condition.

Low dose antidepressants which will help to control abdominal nerve endings may be prescribed. These will help to decrease the pain impulses sent from these nerves to the brain.

Antispasmodic medication will help control intestinal muscle spasms and abdominal pain. Musculotropic antispasmodics help to control spasms in the smooth muscles cells and intestinal spasms.

Other medications to slow the movement of food through the digestive tract and laxatives may also be prescribed.
