Bipolar MedicationBipolar medication usually includes a mood stabilizer and an antipsychotic or anticonvulsant. Antidepressants can actually cause bipolar disorder to worsen. Sometimes, antidepressants like Zoloft, Wellbutrin and Prozac are prescribed in conjunction with other medications. Lithium is a common bipolar medication. It is used as a mood stabilizer to prevent the manic and depressive episodes of bipolar disorder. Anticonvulsants like Depakote are also used to treat bipolar disorder. This drug is good for hard to treat cases and is often taken with lithium for maximum effect. Antipsychotics like Zyprexa, are used for short term control of bipolar symptoms.
