Bipolar Disorder MedicationBipolar disorder medication often involves several different medications. A mood stabilizer is usually taken along with an anticonvulsant or antipsychotic. Antidepressants can cause bipolar disorder to worsen but are sometimes taken in conjunction with other medications. Lithium is a mood stabilizer that is taken to prevent the manic and depressive episodes of bipolar disorder. Anticonvulsants like Depakote are becoming more common with hard to treat cases and are often taken with lithium for maximum effect. Zyprexa is a common antipsychotic used for short term control of bipolar disorder. It reduces the chemical imbalance that leads to manic episodes.
